{"id":4867,"date":"2014-01-19T19:00:57","date_gmt":"2014-01-20T03:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sands-trustee.com\/?p=4867"},"modified":"2024-05-31T05:19:35","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T12:19:35","slug":"sands-associates-releases-second-annual-bc-consumer-debt-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sands-trustee.com\/blog\/sands-associates-releases-second-annual-bc-consumer-debt-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Sands &amp; Associates Releases Second Annual BC Consumer Debt Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sands &amp; Associates, BC&#8217;s largest firm of licensed Trustees in bankruptcy and consumer proposal\u00a0administrators, today released results of a study offering insight into BC\u2019s soaring\u00a0consumer debt\u00a0levels.\u00a0 As part of the second annual\u00a0BC Consumer Debt Study, the 2013 report profiles trends and key information regarding the non-mortgage debt of British Columbians, specifically focused on markets throughout\u00a0Vancouver\u00a0and the\u00a0Fraser Valley.<\/p>\n<p>The study by Sands &amp; Associates is the only BC-specific study to gather and analyze responses from more than 1,000 debtors throughout the province to better understand the factors pushing the population towards\u00a0insolvency.<\/p>\n<p>The 2013 BC Consumer Debt Study was conducted as a comparative look at consumer debt levels, causes of insolvency, and financial outlooks across three different generations of British Columbia\u2019s in-debt population.\u00a0 Study participants included debtors aged 30 and under (\u201cYouth Generation\u201d); debtors between the ages of 31 and 54 (\u201cMid-Life\/Sandwich Generation\u201d); and debtors aged 55 and older (\u201cPre-Retirement and Retirement Generation\u201d).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sands-trustee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/SA_ConsumerDebtStudy_2013.pdf\">Click here to read the full report in PDF format.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter wp-image-4868 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sands-trustee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/SA_ConsumerDebt2013.jpg\" alt=\"Sands &amp; Associates 2013 BC Consumer Debt Study Infographic\" width=\"612\" height=\"2490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sands-trustee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/SA_ConsumerDebt2013.jpg 612w, https:\/\/www.sands-trustee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/SA_ConsumerDebt2013-12x50.jpg 12w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Results from the 2013 BC Consumer Debt Study highlighted the following trends:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An equal number of men and women struggle with debt \u2013 but the amount of debt increases drastically after the age of 40.<\/li>\n<li>BC consumers ages 31-54 hold the largest proportion of debt loads in the province.<\/li>\n<li>Overextension of credit and unexpected expenses were the leading financial contributor to consumer debt.<\/li>\n<li>46.6% of 31-54 year olds attempted to remedy their situation by working longer hours or an extra job before seeking help from a licensed Trustee.<\/li>\n<li>Nearly 50% of Youth Debtors (widely criticized as entitled and self-indulgent) noted that they are holding off on major life events and would even consider a move out of province if it meant better earning opportunities to improve their financial situation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Blair Mantin, VP of Sands &amp; Associates adds, \u201cThere are greater issues at play here.\u00a0 While BC undoubtedly has a higher cost of living and earning opportunities that can\u2019t compete with Alberta &#8211; consumers are falling short.\u00a0 They are missing essential financial life skills to manage their credit and save.\u00a0 This study shows that even after credit reaches unmanageable levels, most attempt to remedy the issue themselves &#8211; often pushing them closer to insolvency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mantin advises those struggling with debt to speak with a Trustee for a free and confidential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sands-trustee.com\/free-debt-consultation\/\">assessment<\/a> of their available options.\u00a0 To determine your financial risk, simply calculate total non-mortgage debt and divide it by your monthly income (after tax, cash take-home pay).\u00a0 If debts are more than five times the monthly income, you are considered at-risk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sands-trustee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/SA_ConsumerDebtStudy_2013.pdf\">Click here to read the full report in PDF format.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>About Sands &amp; Associates:<\/p>\n<p>Sands &amp; Associates is British Columbia&#8217;s largest firm of licensed Proposal Administrators and Bankruptcy Trustees focused exclusively on personal and small-business insolvency services.
