{"id":6631,"date":"2017-05-25T01:00:41","date_gmt":"2017-05-25T08:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sands-trustee.com\/?p=6631"},"modified":"2024-05-31T05:16:16","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T12:16:16","slug":"sands-associates-releases-fifth-annual-bc-consumer-debt-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sands-trustee.com\/blog\/sands-associates-releases-fifth-annual-bc-consumer-debt-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Sands &amp; Associates Releases Fifth Annual BC Consumer Debt Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA \u2013 May 25, 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sands &amp; Associates, BC\u2019s largest firm of Licensed Insolvency Trustees, released the results of their fifth annual BC Consumer Debt Study today.\u00a0 The 2017 BC Consumer Debt Study provides an in-depth look at consumers\u2019 debt levels, the factors causing individuals\u2019 financial difficulties, with additional insights into the psychological and physical impacts of debt on consumers.<\/p>\n<p>To view the complete study and detailed report, please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sands-trustee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/SA_17_ConsumerDebtReport_Spreads.pdf\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 BC Consumer Debt Study highlighted several findings, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The largest proportion of survey respondents carried between $25,000 and $49,999 worth of unsecured debt (excluding vehicle loans and mortgages) at the time they sought assistance for their debts.<\/li>\n<li>Only making minimum payments, and\/or accumulating more debt were the top two warning signs that made respondents realize their debts were becoming a problem.<\/li>\n<li>More than half of participants (53%) stated that they cut expenses as a measure to deal with their debts; one in four individuals attempted to reduce their housing costs or rent.<\/li>\n<li>When asked how often they found themselves worrying about debts or general finances, 63% of those surveyed said \u201cthe worry was constant\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Virtually all participants (97%) reported that their debts caused them to experience some type of ill-effect symptom, including general sadness, discouragement, fear, panic, anxiety.<\/li>\n<li>Over one-quarter (28%) of overall survey participants said that they suffered from diagnosed depression, contributed to by being in debt.<\/li>\n<li>More than 1 in 6 respondents (18%) said their financial difficulties caused them to experience feelings of suicide, or contemplate suicide as a solution.
